Footnote:
Lewes Castle was built by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey and brother-in-law of William I 'the Conqueror' in 1087. It was always an important bastion of medieval power and in 1264 played a significant part in the Battle of Lewes. As a consequence of the battle, the King came under the control of de Montfort with his son Edward confined (in some comfort) as a guarantor of his father's good behavior. However, a year later at the Battle of Evesham, Simon de Montfort was heavily defeated by the King and Prince Edward who had escaped from captivity to organise opposition to the rebel barons. De Montfort was killed alongside his son Henry. The war dragged on for two more years but complete reconciliation did not come until 1275 with 'the Provisions of Oxford' £400-600
